A gem of a fundraiser

- Janine Rankin

Child Cancer Foundation ambassador Addie Torok, who already has 1800 bravery beads, has her eyes on a new, sparkly piece of bling.

Palmerston North jeweller Ross Hyde has crafted a rose gold and morganite ring valued at $2300 for the foundation, which he will put up for auction on Facebook.

Addie has just turned 7, and has passed the five-year mark since her treatment for the rare life-threatening disease Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) was declared a success.

She has no memories of the intensive treatment, and these days being an ambassador for child cancer is just fun.

Mum Tracy said it was a delight for the family to put their cancer cares behind them.

‘‘The kids [Jackson, 11, Samuel, 8, and Addie] get to go out and have fun, whereas five years ago, we only hoped and dreamed we could do that.’’

Addie was called in to help Hyde launch his project because he did not know any families struggling with a child with cancer. ‘‘My wife Jen and I have been talking. We have no kids and have free time, and wanted to do something better than just giving money to a cause,’’ Hyde said.

The ring, which took seven hours to make, will be auctioned on the Hyde Jewellers Facebook page from tomorrow until July 31.
