He also trains at Flips Motocross Park near Himatangi.

Lockie said he was really excited to go to Australia. ‘‘It will either be really wet or really good,’’ he said.

He was expecting a lot of good riders from 39 countries, and he had a goal in racing: ‘‘To qualify to go to the two races the next day.’’

His favourite thing about riding? ‘‘Winning and doing big jumps and stuff.’’

Because of the cost of taking his own bike to Australia, KTM has supplied Lockie with a new bike to ride for the competitio­n. The family had about eight weeks from when they found out Lockie was selected until they have to leave, so it has been a mad dash trying to cover the costs of flights and overseas licences.

A Givealittl­e page has been set up to help with costs and Lockie is also running car washes and firewood raffles as fundraiser­s.
