Levin a surprise package

Levin Hockey produced the upset of the round in the club hockey competitio­n, drawing 1-all with top-ofthe-table High School Hockey Club.

The result at the twin turfs on Saturday stopped HSHC going clear at the top, while Levin are fifth and unlikely to reach the playoffs.

HSHC stay level with College on 25 points.

Hamish Simmonds scored for Levin, and Luke Higgie was HSHC’S goal scorer.

A dominant first half from College led to a 6-0 win over Whanganui side Tech College Old Boys.

College, who are missing injured players, came out firing in the first half, wanting to put their stamp on the game, and it worked as they shot out to a 5-0 halftime lead.

Dion Spackman had a massive game and scored two goals, while goalkeeper Sean Crook and midfielder Angus Hazlett played well, too.

Caleb Hansen, Mike Young, Tom O’connor and Carlos Jensen were their team’s other goal scorers. Marist had the bye.

In the women’s competitio­n, the top two sides had big wins.

Competitio­n leaders High School Hockey Club thrashed lastplaced Massey 7-2.

Three HSHC players grabbed doubles in the win – Sara-jane Raleigh, Emma Sorenson and Sally Willocks – while Anna Willocks also scored.

Mary-rose Scanlon and Brittany Leppard scored Massey’s goals.

Second-placed College won 6-2 over Palmerston North Girls’ High School.

Amber Jensen scored a brace, while Rebecca Baker, Amy Johnson and Amanda Jonasen also scored.

There are two more weeks before both competitio­ns reach the semifinals on August 18, and some teams will have catchup games to play.
