Gerard Beale has made an impressive start to his Warriors career since recovering from injury during the season.

And the Kiwis centre may have revealed the secret to his success – sparring sessions against his wife.

Roimata Beale took up boxing as a hobby two years ago but has since built an 8-1 amateur record and is aiming to represent New Zealand at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Writing for Australian website Playersvoice, Beale said his wife was on track to developing into a top-level boxer. And he should know after being asked to step into the ring with her at training last year.

‘‘I can tell you from first-hand experience that she’s powerful and very, very quick,’’ Beale said.

‘‘Fortunately for me, she was concentrating on body shots so there wasn’t much chance of any facial injuries. If she had got me a good one, I would never have heard the end of it from my teammates. The boys would have been merciless. Still, I had the headgear on . . . just in case.’’

Senior playmaker Blake Green has been ruled out after succumbing to the calf injury he picked up during last week’s loss to the Bulldogs in Sydney.

However, coach Stephen Kearney is set to welcome back Tohu Harris after the star backrower

Gerard admitted it was a ‘‘weird’’ experience to box with the mother of his three kids and ‘‘love of your life’’. But the entire family is excited about what she could achieve.

Roimata is preparing to fight for the New Zealand championship in the 57kg category in a few months and a win would be a huge step towards fulfilling her Olympic dream. guarantee a place in the finals.

Green has been replaced in the No 6 jersey by Mason Lino but is expected to return against the Raiders next week. Lino’s selection is the only change to the starting lineup used in the last three games.

Having joined the Warriors from Cronulla in the off-season, Gerard missed the first 10 matches of the season after breaking his leg playing for the Kiwis at last year’s World Cup.

But he has not missed a game since, establishing himself a key part of the Warriors’ right edge.

He has taken inspiration from his wife’s approach to her sport.

‘‘When she’s home she’s home,

Mason Lino, Shaun Johnson, James Gavet, Issac Luke, Agnatius Paasi, Isaiah Papali’i, Adam Blair, Simon Mannering Interchange: Jazz Tevaga, Tohu Harris, Bunty Afoa, Peta Hiku, Leivaha Pulu, Anthony Gelling, Chris Satae, Karl Lawton.

and she’s a wonderful wife and mother. And now, she’s turned a fitness hobby into a genuine passion and quite possibly a career,’’ he added in the Playersvoice.

‘‘You can’t help but admire that. Not many people could do that. I’ve tried to apply a few of her traits to my own footy career. Just not the punches. That’s a send-off offence in my world.’’
