Theatre getting in on the act

- Carly Thomas carly.thomas@stuff.co.nz

Feilding Little Theatre may be small, but it will be part of a big competition when it hosts teams battling it out for a spot at the Theatrefest National Final.

Three teams will compete at the Regional Theatrefests event and those selected will then go to the national final in Wellington next month.

Feilding Little Theatre committee member Joan Ford said the competition provided a wonderful opportunity for societies, schools and drama groups to develop theatre skills.

‘‘And more importantly, to share ideas and techniques.

‘‘Many of our aspiring professional actors began at this level with New Zealand Theatre.’’

A one-act play each from Napier Girls’ High School, Khandallah Arts Theatre and Masterton’s Harlequin Youth Theatre will be presented and they will be judged by theatre director and speech and drama teacher Pam Logan.

The ultimate award for the winning team at the national finals is the book of honour, which Feilding High School has received three times and Feilding Little Theatre once.

The awards were set up in 1970 to provide a national link between people who are interested in theatre, and working in theatre societies, schools, youth theatres and other organisations throughout the country. Eleven teams are competing throughout the country to earn a place at the national final.

The New Zealand Theatre Regional One Acts Final will be held tomorrow at Feilding Little Theatre at 7pm.
