Manukura qualify top yet again

Manukura completed a hat-trick of lower North Island secondary schools netball titles by beating New Plymouth GHS 22-20 in the final.

The win at Palmerston North’s Vautier Park on Friday qualifies Manukura for the national secondary schools finals next month and is their third win in a row. They also won in 2014.

Manukura went through the tournament unbeaten, including a 42-33 win over Napier Girls’ High School in the semifinal.

Palmerston North Girls’ High School finished sixth after they were beaten 36-11 by Sacred Heart College Lower Hutt in their final game. The loss means Girls’ High miss out on a spot at the national tournament, with the top five qualifying. Feilding High School finished 21st, beating Havelock North High School 39-35. Horowhenua College lost to Wanganui Collegiate School 27-23 to finish last out of the 32 teams.

PNBHS was the best performing Manawatu¯ team at the zone three qualifying tournament for the national basketball championsh­ips. Boys’ High finished third at the tournament at the Arena last week, beating St Patrick’s College Wellington 79-53 in their last game on Saturday.

Boys’ High only lost one of their six games and that was in the semifinal to Napier Boys’ High School, who won the final 77-72 over Rongotai College. Feilding High School finished 16th with six losses.

PNGHS finished sixth in the girls’ competitio­n, with three wins and three losses, including a 58-39 loss to Wellington Girls’ College on Saturday.

Feilding High School finished ninth, with six losses. They lost 72-53 in the final game to Wellington East Girls’ College.

The Manukura girls team won the A qualifying tournament for smaller schools, beating Te Aroha College 85-38 in the final in New Plymouth on Saturday. Manukura won all six of their games. The Manukura boys team finished third after they won 81-57 in their final game. Manukura had six wins and two losses.

Tu Toa lost 80-61 to Te Aroha College in the playoff for fifth and sixth spot. Tu Toa also had six wins and two losses.

St Peter’s College finished 15th with five losses and two wins.

The national secondary schools basketball championsh­ips, both the premier and A competitio­ns, are in Palmerston North next month.

Manukura’s boys team finished eighth at the national rugby league championsh­ips in Auckland on Friday.

Manukura lost 20-16 to St Thomas of Canterbury College in their final playoff game. Manukura had two wins and a loss in pool play, but were beaten 18-14 by Wesley College in the semifinal. Manawatu¯ College finished 20th.

The PNBHS first XI hockey team finished 12th at the Rankin Cup tournament at Tauranga on Saturday, losing their final playoff game 5-4 to Wellington College in added extra time.

Boys’ High had a win, a loss and a draw in pool play, but won one one of four playoff games. The Palmerston North Girls’ High School first XI finished 11th at the Federation Cup in Whangarei. Girls’ High beat King’s College in their final playoff 2-1 in added extra time. They were unbeaten in pool play, but only won two playoff games.

PNBHS finished sixth at the national badminton championsh­ips, losing 4-2 to St Kentigern College in their final playoff game in Auckland on Thursday.

Boys’ High had three wins, a draw and a loss in pool play, then beat Rosehill College 5-1 in their first playoff game. PNGHS finished fifth in the girls competitio­n, having had three wins and four losses, including a 4-2 win over John Paul College (Rotorua) on the final day.
