‘We are all artists’

-

Anyone who parks next to UCOL’S catering and hospitality building in Palmerston North will notice an unequivocal message, that art is for everyone.

More than 80 artists came together to spell it out – ‘‘we are all artists’’.

It’s known as the Pasteup! project and it is backed by UCOL, Te Manawa’s NOA Open Art Studio and the Palmerston North City Council.

NOA Open Art Studio works with groups from the disability community and anyone interested in art by holding two weekly sessions at Te Manawa.

The original artworks were scanned and pasted to the wall of the UCOL building in Queen St.

The nature of the work means it will eventually be destroyed by the elements.

Artists of all ages and abilities were encouraged to come to NOA and to create the letters that could be used to spell out the phrase.

Local artist Keli Jarvis then made her selections about which ones would be picked to get across the message. Any artworks that were not used in the main sentence were pasted below it, so they were still included in the installation.

Te Manawa people and partnerships leader Janet Ellery said the installation was a symbol of inclusivity and showed the strength of working together.

‘‘The whole is bigger than the sum of the parts,’’ she said.
