Palmerston North Boys’ High School’s OK Chorale group hit the right notes at the Big Sing national finale.

The Boys’ High singing group won a silver award in Wellington earlier this month. Of the 257 choirs to compete at regional events, 24 are invited to the finale.

Songs performed by OK Chorale included Scottish song Loch Lomond, the German Grab und Mond Samoan song O Le Taualuga, the Latin Ubi Caritas and Jing-ga-lye-ya.

Choir members Robin Park and Digby Werthmuller, both 17, have been singing together since they were year 9 and are now in their final year.

OK Chorale has always had 16 singers and always been a cappella, making it more challenging.

Of the 24 teams at the finale, only four were all-male groups, and not being accompanied by music gave Boys’ High a point of difference.

‘‘The brotherhood and the friendship we have with each other when we get on stage, we’re not 16 separate voices performing, we all mould into one instrument or one voice,’’ Park said. ‘‘It contributes to how well we get on with each other.’’

Werthmuller said because noone in their choir had been to the national finale before they watched the other choirs to see what the level of competition was.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the OK Chorale group and they have been to the national finale 13 times. They are holding a reunion and concert on October 27. They are one of the oldest groups to enter nationals and their musical director Graeme Young has been conducting for 25 years.
