No medals for Kiwis

-

New Zealand finished out of the medals in eventing at the World Equestrian Games in North Carolina.

With the jumping completed yesterday the best placed in the individual competition was Tim Price on Cekatinka, who ended up in eighth place.

Price picked up four faults on the showjumping, for knocking over one fence. If he had managed a clear round he would have medalled.

It was a similar situation for his wife, Jonelle, she knocked over two fences on Classic Moet and placed 19th overall. A clear round would have a put her fourth in the individual standings.

Individual rider Dan Jocelyn and Grovine de Reve finished well down on the standings after adding a disappointing eight faults in the showjumping.

Rosalind Canter from Britain won gold in the individual, thanks to a faultless performance in the jumping, while Padraig Mccarthy from Ireland was second and Germany’s Ingrid Klimke third.

For the teams competition New Zealand placed seventh, but were never in contention for a medal going into the show jumping as Mark Todd on Mclaren and Blyth Tait with Dassett Courage both had terrible days in the cross country, with Todd 58th and Tait eliminated.

Britain took the gold medal in the team championship, with Ireland getting the silver and France the bronze.

However, because of the results New Zealand has qualified an eventing team for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

There was less than a rail between New Zealand qualifying for Tokyo or not, and they finished just ahead of the United States to secure the berth.

?? ?? Tim Price and Cekatinka knocked one rail in the showjumping which was the difference between a medal and eighth spot at the World Equestrian Games in North Carolina.
