Something for everyone at the Moon Festival

- Hope Burmeister

Moon Festival performance, Regent on Broadway, Palmerston North, Sunday September 16.

It was a night of both traditional and modern performances, along with an informative, but a little out-of-place, forum about life in Asian countries.

Most of the speakers spoke in Mandarin, with an English translation.

Although there was a brief explanation of what the Moon Festival is about and a moon cake raffle, little time was spent on the history of the festival.

Instead, most of the night was about enjoying both dance and singing performances as an audience.

What also brought the audience together was the Wechat forum on the screen, where people could post whatever they wanted.

The highlight of the night were the dance crews, including the Massey Manawatu¯ Dance Club and the K-pop group from Auckland.

Even though the K-pop group had to restart their routine due to technical difficulties with the music, its hip-hop routine was upbeat and lively.

The Brass Band was nothing short of spectacular.

There were many Chinese performances throughout the show, including dances in traditional clothes and songs in Mandarin.

It was overall a vibrant night with something for everyone, Chinese or non-chinese, as a traditional festival celebrated in somewhat modern style.
