Tokomaru pupils to wow at wearable arts

-

How technology has changed the world and looking after the environment are some of the topics Tokomaru School pupils have grappled with for their wearable arts show.

The show is at the Tokomaru Public Hall today and this year the theme is Journey.

The children have gone all out creating their costumes and there are more than 25 entries.

Room four pupil Faith Waho, 11, is modelling her group’s design, Digital Virus.

‘‘We did a garment about how technology changed the world,’’ Faith said.

They created a papier-mache globe, covered in ripped-up maps.

Inside is computer automation, showing how big a role technology plays in people’s lives today.

Twelve-year-old O’meara-jean Daniela is modelling JV Tours, inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Around The World in Eighty Days and the journey the character Phileas Fogg took. Emma Louth, 11, is the model for Wrathful Inferno, made from scrunched-up paper and burnt match sticks.

She got the idea about the journey a match takes until it is burned from lighting the fire. Her group had the painstaking task of burning hundreds of matches then gluing them to the cloak.

Hollie Thomas, 10, from room three, is modelling Candy Kids, made of lolly wrappers. Carousel Candies donated lollies and lolly wrappers.

Recycling is room three’s journey.

‘‘Room three does all the recycling for Tokomaru School, so we thought we could do recycling because in 25 years’ time the world will probably be messy and dirty and there will be rubbish everywhere,’’ Hollie said.

Samantha Glenny, 9, is modelling Musical Bouquet, a long dress made of newspapers and sheet music.

Tokomaru principal Sonia Mudgway hoped to make the event like long-running Feilding High School fundraiser and wearable arts show Evento.

Mudgway said the children have had to solve problems creating their art and the technology side of the project was extensive.
