Logjam for second as Southern fly high

Southern United will head into their first bye week in the National Women’s Football League on a high, after a round where there were goals galore.

The Southerners have moved into a tie for second after beating Waikato-bay of Plenty 6-3 in Auckland yesterday, level on seven points with Auckland, who drew 1-1 with Capital later in the day at the same venue, and the Northern Lights, who beat Central 7-0.

Canterbury United Pride had the weekend off, yet remain top of the table, two points clear of the chasing trio.

Northern were always going to be no match for Central and eased to a win at Mcfetridge Park in Auckland, with Maggie Jenkins bagging a brace and Sam Tawharu, Malia Steinmetz, Dayna Stevens, Aneka Mittendorf and Helena Kelderman also scoring.

They will face a tougher test this weekend when they host a well-rested Pride outfit on Sunday. In the other matches, Waibop travel to Wellington on Saturday to play Capital, while Auckland are away to Central on Sunday.
