The Manawatu¯ club match between Marist and Freyberg wasn’t destined to be one for batsmen with three Central Districts pace bowlers in the mix.

Marist beat Freyberg by eight wickets at Manawaroa Park on Saturday, playing on grass pitches for the first time this season.

Marist had New Zealand fast bowler Adam Milne and CD paceman Navin Patel back to boost their bowling attack and they made life hard for the Freyberg batsmen.

Freyberg had another CD pace bowler in their ranks in Bevan Small.

Milne wasn’t coming off his full run-up, but was still whipping it down and bowling in-swinging yorkers on a good bowling surface.

Milne took 4-7 from nine overs, while Patel was bowling at pace too and finished with 0-21 from six overs.

All the Marist bowlers performed, as the rest of their pace attack chipped in too. Jack Gleeson took 1-0, Dylan Lynch 1-13 and Connor Morriss 2-23, while spinner Arana Noema-barnett picked up 2-5 as Freyberg limped to just 82.

Freyberg opener Charles Parker did his best to hold out, before he was caught down the leg side for 22.

The next best for Freyberg were Thomas Walshe with 12 and Thomas Kuggeleijn with 11.

Marist openers Noema-barnett and Whetu na Nagara then made sure Marist didn’t have much stress in their chase.

Freyberg bowled but didn’t have enough runs to play with, as Marist reached 86-2 in 25 overs.

Noema-barnett scored 39 and na Nagara 36 to set up the chase.

Small bowled well with 0-12 from five overs and seamer Sean Fulton returned 0-10 from five.

Medium-pacer Kuggeleijn was the pick of their bowlers with 1-20 from six overs and Harry Wenham took 1-6 from 1.1.

Old Boys won their second match in a row, beating United by two wickets.

United batted first and were bowled out for 162 in 38.2 overs.

United didn’t have any major scores from their top order, as Old Boys paceman Ray Toole, 2-19, took a couple of early wickets.

United mounted a recovery at 112-4 with Hayden Hill and Akhil Pant at the crease.

But Pant was bowled by left-arm spinner Trent Mcgrath for 29 and Hill was caught behind soon after for 25.

Mcgrath then went to work removing the tail, as he finished with 4-21 from 8.2 overs and a runout.

All four of his victims were bowled. In reply, Old Boys lost an early wicket, but opener Garry Hodge was steady at the top, scoring 32.

United seamer George Berry, 4-48, took four middle-order wickets to make things interesting with Old Boys at 91-6 .

But Henry Boon joined Toole to finish the job off, as Boon scored 24 and Toole was unbeaten on 35 as they got home in 36.5 overs.

The match between Palmerston and Palmerston North Boys’ High School was postponed because the schoolboys are touring South Africa.

Boys’ High have had three losses in their past three games of the tour.

In their latest match they lost by nine wickets to St David’s Marist Inanda in Johannesburg.

Boys’ High also lost to St Alban’s College in Pretoria by five wickets and by 188 runs to South Africa Colleges School in Cape Town.
