Watts and Crawley take out top gongs

Squash and motorsport were the top codes at the Manawatu¯ secondary schools sports awards.

Squash player Kaitlyn Watts won the supreme girls award at the ceremony at Awapuni racecourse on Wednesday night and motorsport driver Callum Crawley was the top boy.

Freyberg High School student Watts was this year selected in the New Zealand senior women’s team that went to the world championsh­ips in China and she was also in the New Zealand junior team.

Crawley is in the Elite Motorsport Academy and won the 2017-18 New Zealand Formula First championsh­ip.

Crawley is from Feilding and goes to Palmerston North Boys’ High School.

The Palmerston North Boys’ High School track cycling team were named team of the year. They finished third overall at the national track cycling championsh­ips at Cambridge earlier this year.

Angus Claasen won the under-20 competitio­n, Michael Richmond was second in the under-17 event, Ben Irvine was second in the under-16s and Ewan Cousin was third, while Chenuka Rajapakse was third in the under-15 grade.

The senior sprint team won, the senior pursuit team was third and the junior sprint team was second.

It was a hockey double in the official-of-the-year awards. Olivia Hunt from Palmerston North Girls’ High School was the girls’ winner, while Jacob Cowx, from Feilding High School, was one of the boys’ winners.

Cowx shared his title with basketball umpire Sam Mcfadzean, from Boys’ High.
