First $1m house for Feilding

- Sam Kilmister

A residential home in Feilding has been sold for $1 million for the first time in the town’s history.

The 6040-square-metre property, nestled on the edge of a native bush reserve in Mt Taylor, overlooks Palmerston North and the Ruahine Range and boasts its own walking tracks.

The five-bedroom villa, sold last week, comes with two paddocks, an adventure playground, a workshop, two garages and a chicken coop. It has two bathrooms and a third toilet.

House prices in the Manawatu¯ town are creeping past those in Palmerston North, with Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures showing Feilding’s median house price hit an alltime high of $465,000 in September.

That’s a 43 per cent increase over the past 12 months and $65,000 more than its city neighbours.

Although the Auckland market appeared to be cooling, Feilding appeared to be doing the opposite, NZR agent Nicola Barnett said.

She said the number of top-end buyers interested in Feilding properties had lifted in the past six months. The Mt Taylor home, which requested offers over $880,000, drew a different group of buyers than she had seen for other ‘‘high-end’’ properties.

‘‘We think proximity to a large hospital, airport, amenities and central locality is attracting people for retirement purposes, maybe instead of where they may have retired 10 years ago.’’

More people were also moving to the region for work.
