Strip-club-free era to end

- Kirsty Lawrence

It’s been almost a decade since Palmerston North had a strip club, but that’s about to change.

A strip joint is set to open at The New Railway Hotel on April 26, the first in the city since Firecats closed in 2010.

Businesswoman Oksana Stewart said she had met with the Palmerston North City Council and police about her plans.

Stewart had retired from stripping when she became pregnant.

However, in November last year she created Golden Dragon Girls, a business in which people can rent strippers and waitresses for their events.

Shortly after her business started, she was approached by another business.

The space in the hotel was a room usually hired out for events but it wasn’t used much any more, so it was offered to Stewart.

‘‘We are currently working on renovating it.’’

This would include setting up poles, stages, private rooms and changing rooms.

Her hopes had been to open in March but her baby was due then, so they pushed the opening weekend back.

Stewart said most feedback had been positive.

She was looking for employees and said once poles were fitted in the building she would be holding sessions to train the women.

The club would have a door charge and dress code.
