Bedding getting it right

Since sleep is so important, it matters to set the scene properly, writes Joanna Davis.

Experts agree that sleep is a pillar of good health; what’s more surprising is how important it is to set the scene correctly.

All the soft furnishings necessary to the dressing of your bed can contribute positively or adversely to healthy sleep outcomes.

Sleep matters. It provides the downtime to allow our bodies to regulate their own processes and lack of it is linked to health problems including high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Decent sleep, on the other hand, boosts mood, athletic performance, memory and even cuts your risk of getting a cold. synthetic mattresses should change them much sooner.

‘‘It’s not so much the spring unit; it’s the comfort layers that matter. You can’t beat natural product.’’

Henderson’s company uses cotton, wool and latex, all natural products, unlike the cheaper (and synthetic) foams and gels.

He said the problem with manmade products is heat retention. ‘‘A wool/latex mattress absorbs moisture and later dissipates it into the atmosphere, useful for those who feel the heat or are going through menopause.

‘‘By cooling you down, it’s calming you down.’’

Memory foam and polyester products may be soft, but they don’t keep the heat out of the situation. ‘‘The minimum we suggest is

1350 grams of wool per square metre and 25mm latex underneath the wool,’’ says David.

Plastic mattress protectors are another concern. ‘‘It’s like sucking a sweet with the wrapper on it, you don’t get the benefit.’’

Timothy Dutt from Ultimate Beds says it’s also important that a quality mattress is chosen according to age and body type.
