Sounds of Summer concert series organisers hope the event will grow as the event tours around the region.

After a year off, the summer concert series returned on Sunday with a concert at the reserve next to Feilding Library kicking off a five-stop tour of Manawatu¯ , instead of five weeks based at the Esplanade in Palmerston North.

There will also be concerts at Hiwinui School, Makino Pool in Feilding, A¯ piti Tavern and then finishes back in Feilding.

More than 100 people attended the event at the library, pleasing organiser Fraser Greig of Manawatu¯ People’s Radio.

‘‘It’s the first event, so no-one knows what to make of it,’’ he said. ‘‘The people that have come down seem to be enjoying it.

‘‘I’m hoping future events get more people.’’

Greig said the concerts were always great community events and people seemed to be interested.

After the series had last year off, Greig said it was a good way to promote Manawatu¯ People’s Radio, formerly Access Manawatu¯ , to the region.

Jon Bowen, Wandrella, Ben and The Believers and Andy Anderson all performed on Sunday.

Feilding’s Renee Dingwall went to the concert with children Leilani, 7, Isobell, 9, and Charlotte, 15.

‘‘We quite like the Sounds of Summer concert when they used to have them in the Esplanade,’’ Dingwall said. ‘‘They’re not doing those any more and we’re also massive fans of Wandrella.’’

Dingwall said it was good to support community concerts and she hoped to go to the rest of the series.

Artists Joe Mcmenamin and Mike Marsh were there painting and their work will be exhibited on March 10 at Joe’s Art Gallery and Studio in Feilding.

The Hiwinui concert this weekend will be performed in conjunction with the Hiwinui School picnic and the A¯

piti¯concert has been timed to coincide with the Apiti family mountain bike ride.

The series runs until March 10.
