Caregiver accused

A former Child Youth and Family caregiver has been charged with historical sexual offending against 17 boys. The man, aged in his 50s, worked for Oranga Tamariki’s predecessor in Auckland and faces 43 charges. Stuff understands the offending happened at a Child Youth and Family facility. Sixteen of the boys were in the care of the man at the time of the offending and staying at the Child Youth and Family facility in the mid-2000s. The majority of the victims were aged in their mid teens at the time, according to court documents. The charges include sexual violation. As well as the sex charges, the man is accused of giving some of the boys drugs. The accused, whose name is suppressed, has been remanded in custody and is due back in court next month. Oranga Tamariki declined to answer questions about vetting processes and whether it was involved in the investigation.
