Boys’ High miss finals

The Palmerston North Boys’ High School first XI have missed out on a spot at the national secondary school finals later in the year.

Boys’ High lost by 13 runs to Hastings’ Lindisfarn­e College in the Central Districts qualifiers at Fitzherber­t Park last week, so Lindisfarn­e qualify.

Boys’ High limited Lindisfarn­e to 193-9 from their 50 overs, pulling it back from when Lindisfarn­e were 105-1 after 27 overs. Boys’ High spinner Jack Wenham took 4 for 28.

In Boys’ High’s turn at bat, they were in a solid position at 111-3. But after Ruben Love was run out for 49, the lower order fell over and they were dismissed for 180.

Boys’ High had thrashed Marlboroug­h Boys’ College by 162 runs in the semifinal. Boys’ High scored 229 all out batting first, then dismissed Marlboroug­h for just 67.

Palmerston North Girls’ High School also competed in the girls’ CD qualifiers last week, but were beaten by 75 runs in the final by Wairarapa’s St Matthew’s Collegiate School.

St Matthew’s scored 165-4, but Girls’ High were bowled out for 90 in the final over.

Girls’ High beat Napier Girls’ High School in the semifinal in a tied match that was decided by a super over. Napier batted first and scored 149-2, and Girls’ High levelled the score with 149-3 in their reply. Ashtuti Kumar made 67.

In the super over Girls’ High scored 9, Napier was set 10 to win, but Napier could only muster 7 runs.

Meanwhile, the Manawatu¯ Cricket Associatio­n handed out its representa­tive team awards last week.

Opening batsman Mason Hughes won the award for rep team player of the year and most meritoriou­s innings for his 122 against Taranaki.

The most-meritoriou­s-bowling award went to Carlos Jensen for his 4-12 off 12 overs against Whanganui.

Fast bowler Bevan Small won the best fielder award and allrounder Arana Noema-barnett won the award for most promising player.

In the women’s awards, batter Ashtuti Kumar was named women’s player of the year.

Young bowler Ashleigh Hurley won the promising player award and the women’s bowling award for taking six wickets at an average of 13.17.

Mikaela Greig won the batting award for scoring 193 runs at an average of 38.60. Gina Collis won the players’ player award.

Central Districts also gave out their awards and Nelson batsman Greg Hay was named the player of the year, players’ player of the year and Plunket Shield player of the year.

Taranaki batsman Tom Bruce and Hawke’s Bay bowler Blair Tickner were joint twenty20 players of the year, while Hawke’s Bay batsman Dean Foxcroft was the one-day player of the year.

Taranaki wicketkeep­er Natalie Dodd was the women’s player of the year and the one-day player of the year.

Manawatu¯ bowler Hannah Rowe was the twenty20 player of the year, while Nelson bowler Claudia Green won the players’ player award and the emerging player award.

Sam Ferguson (Hawke’s Bay) was the under-17 player of the year, Thomas Zohrab (Nelson) the under19 player of the year and Rosemary Mair (Hawke’s Bay) the under-21 player of the year.

Manawatu¯ ’s Hughes was the Chapple Cup player of the year and Taranaki spinner Mattie Thomas was the Hawke Cup player of the year.

Feilding won the premier two one-day title, beating Old Boys by 73 runs at Fitzherber­t Park on Saturday.

Feilding scored 116 batting first, then rolled Old Boys for just 43. Left-arm seamer Kit Bradley took 7-12.

Manawatu opening batsman Mason Hughes won the award for representa­tive team player of the year.
