One-sided weekend in women’s comp
The Manawatu¯ club hockey competition began last weekend with predictable scores in the women’s premier competition and close games in the men’s.
The College women’s team played Palmerston North Girls’
High School at Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North, on Saturday and won 4-1.
Controversy surrounded one of College’s goals, with the goal being scored off the first shot in a penalty corner that didn’t hit the backboard, flying instead into the back of the net, which isn’t allowed on a first shot in a PC. However, the goal was awarded, extending College’s lead.
They missed a few chances in the circle and Girls’ High’s goalkeeper made some good saves to stop the score from blowing out.
Maddie Harris played well for Girls’ High, while returning player Charlotte Symes was a standout for College.
In the other women’s match, defending champions High
School Hockey Club showed no sign of slowing down this season, thumping Massey 7-0.
Wanganui are back in the premier women’s competition after dropping to the reserve grade last year, but they had a bye.
In the men’s competition,
Wanganui have dropped down from the premier grade to the reserve grade, leaving an even amount of teams in the top grade. Palmerston North Boys’ High School lost 4-2 to defending champions High School Hockey Club. Marist beat Massey 3-2 in a tightly contested match, with Levin Hockey (Manawatu¯ College Old Boys) losing 2-1 to College. When competition resumes on April 27, Massey meet High School, Levin (MCOB) play Boys’ High in Levin, and Marist will play College. In the women’s competition Girls’ High play Wanganui, High School play College and Massey have the bye.
