Massey’s rare win

- Alex Loo

Massey University have produced a rare win and Hokowhitu Football Club recorded a hard-fought victory over one of their biggest rivals in the women’s Federation League.

Hokowhitu managed to beat their bogey team, Palmerston North Marist, at Memorial Park, Palmerston North, on Sunday, earning themselves a 2-1 win. The past two encounters between the teams have resulted in draws.

Hokowhitu dominated the first half, scoring two unanswered goals before Marist equalised late in the second half with a penalty.

Marist coach Jason Crawford said Hokowhitu managed to punish his team’s mistakes and Marist were unable to convert their chances.

‘‘We had all the possession. We were just unlucky when it came to striking ... We had a number of opportunities.’’

The rivalry between Massey and Whanganui has been fierce all season, with Sunday’s game being the fourth encounter this season. Massey managed to win at Wembley Park in Whanganui with a dominant 4-1 display.

Whanganui took the lead early with a strike from distance, but Massey soon equalised and kept the hosts scoreless in the second half. Taradale Football Club maintained their good form with a strong 10-0 win over Feilding United.

They are second on the table, with a game in hand over teams behind them.

In the W-league, Palmerston North Marist have taken points off Wairarapa United, playing out a 1-1 draw in Masterton. It was both sides first draw of the season. Marist scored the first goal, but Wairarapa found an equaliser through a penalty.
