Kiwi singer pares it back for solo show

- Greer Berry

For James Reid, his latest solo tour is a long way from sitting on his father’s knee as a 4-year-old singing Rhinestone Cowboy.

But some things never change and the 45-year-old is going back to his roots by offering stripped-back acoustic tunes that will include hits from his band The Feelers as well as new solo material.

Reid, originally from Christchurch, will perform an intimate concert at the Globe, Palmerston North, on September 19.

The show will feature Kiwi singalong classics from The Feelers catalogue, such as Venus, Stand Up, Larger Than Life, Pressure Man and As Good As It Gets, as well as new solo works such as his latest single Planet Nowhere.

A new album is in the works and is due for release next year.

‘‘I can’t wait to tour in early spring and play in some of my favourite places around the country,’’ he said.

‘‘This is a chance to strip a lot of these songs right back to the way they were written, acoustic guitar and vocal, and spin a few yarns too.’’

Reid, who was a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for The Feelers, is still

influenced heavily by country music. He also draws inspiration from the likes of the Beatles, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Sting, Cat Stevens, The Kinks and The Jam, folk singers through to grunge, and more recently the songwriting of Ryan Tedder, from One Republic.

As well as Palmerston North, the tour will also head to New Plymouth, Wellington, Tauranga, Hamilton, Wanaka, Invercargill, Dunedin, Methven, Christchurch, Nelson, Auckland, North Shore and Whangarei.

Tickets for the concert are $45.75 and are available from Eventfinda. The event is R18.
