New state-of-the-art Puddleducks’ centre

A new state-of-the-art early childcare centre is about to open in Palmerston North.

Puddleducks’ Nursery and Preschools is opening a new centre on Featherston St in Palmerston North next week, with the final touches going on this week.

The centre, behind Kauri Health Care, will cater for up to 75 children a day and employ 20 staff.

It is split into three rooms custombuilt for three age groups – infants, toddlers and preschool – and has a large outside space for each group, sleep rooms, an interior courtyard and a commercial kitchen.

Centre leader Becs Bowring said by taking 75 children, Puddleducks’ was focusing on quality teaching spaces, rather than trying to fit the maximum number of children in.

There are play spaces, sandpits, space for bike riding and a water feature. The children can also be taken to the neighbouring Pitt Park.

Every small detail appears to have been thought of. Even the walls are pin boards, which double as soundproofing.

The children will be provided with meals.

The infant room can accommodate 15 children and five teachers are assigned to the area. Each child gets the same primary carer every time. ‘‘It’s the next best thing to being at home with mum and dad,’’ Bowring said.

This centre offers reusable nappies at no extra charge.

Puddleducks’ general manager Hamish Davidson said he was thrilled with the modern, safe, warm and friendly environment.

‘‘We wanted a centre that was purpose built with children and our staff at the centre of its design,’’ Davidson said.

‘‘We already had the great location and outlook.

‘‘Our building and contracting team has worked really hard to deliver a truly unique indoor and outdoor space.’’

Davidson said the new centre would apply the same Puddleducks’ values of high-quality teaching.

‘‘Parents want a safe and secure environment for their child and we just know that Featherston St is going to give them and their children that special homely feeling they’re after.’’

Puddleducks’ was started in Feilding 19 years ago by the Davidson family and the company now has six centres in Palmerston North and two in Feilding.

Spaces are still available at the new centre.
