Police seek information about death

- Tommy Livingston

Police are appealing for information relating to the suspected hit-and-run involving an elderly woman in Whanganui.

Masonic Retirement Village resident Fay Lorraine Butler, 79, also known as Fay O’brien, was found dead just before 2am on August 28 near the intersection of Anzac Parade and Helmore St, having suffered injuries likely caused by a vehicle.

Police have yet to find the driver or the vehicle, but have singled out ‘‘several vehicles of interest’’, Senior Sergeant Aaron Bunker said.

‘‘We’re looking for the driver of a grey four-door sedan with a black middle trim that was in the Anzac Pde and Helmore St area at the time,’’ he said.

‘‘We’re also looking for a dark Suv-type vehicle and several people nearby on foot.’’

Several people had provided information so far, Bunker said.

‘‘If members of the public know anybody with these sorts of vehicles and they’ve been acting suspiciously, they can contact us.’’

Masonic Court Rest Home facility manager Victoria Morris said Butler had had an independent-living flat at the retirement village on Masonic Drive.

‘‘We just hope that whoever was responsible, whoever ran from the scene, realises she was an important part of our village and how hard this is for her family and friends.

‘‘They need to do the right thing and come forward so we can all have some closure.’’

Anyone who has information about this incident can to call police on 105, quoting file number 190830/2824, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
