Paedophile killer close to being freed
A man who killed a paedophile caught sexually abusing a girl at a party is extremely close to being released from prison.
Bruce Raymond Tamatea, 58, is serving a life sentence for, with his nephew Aubery Thomas Harrison in July 2007, murdering Glen Stinson.
A woman who has name suppression was also involved and was convicted of manslaughter. She attacked Stinson at a party in Palmerston North after finding him sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl, before he was bundled into a car and driven to Foxton.
Tamatea and Harrison beat him to death, with Tamatea admitting he hit him with a hammer and choked him before leaving his body outside a poultry farm.
Harrison was declined parole at his first hearing recently, but Tamatea has twice been seen by the board.
He had his third hearing in September and was once again declined an early release.
However, he has been working hard to get ready for life outside the wire, according to a Parole Board report provided to Stuff.
He has completed drug treatment, a medium-intensity rehabilitation programme and one-on-one counselling.
He also spent time in the self-care units and doing guided releases, and there is the possibility of him taking part in the release-to-work scheme.
That has helped bring his reoffending risk down to mediumto-low – a good achievement for someone long-affiliated with Black Power
He was also on medication for mental health problems, having previously reported hearing voices.
The Parole Board said he would need supervision in the community to ensure he kept taking his medication.
The board thought about releasing Tamatea, but he could not be given a solid date for when his accommodation would be ready.
‘‘Because of that he remains an undue risk.’’ He will appear before the board by the end of the year, but could be seen before then if accommodation is settled sooner.
Stinson had a long history of child sex abuse, first offending sexually when 17 before amassing more convictions.
His son was also a sex offender. The pair met for the first time in Manawatu¯ Prison.
