Opportunity for creatives

-

Thirty actors and 20 artists are being sought for a scheme to give emerging talent a leg up.

Square Edge Community Arts and Centrepoint Theatre, both in Palmerston North, are hosting The Sunday Script Sessions, which comprise rehearsed readings of new one-act plays and an art exhibition.

The five-week programme commences on August 30.

Centrepoint ran workshops with 19 playwrights during lockdown. They will now be matched with professional directors.

Thirty actors are needed to perform in the plays, and auditions will be held on July 4 and 5.

There would be four readings on each Sunday evening at Centrepoint, featuring a rotating exhibition from Square Edge artists in the foyer.

Centrepoint associate director Lizzie Tollemache said the scheme gave Manawatu¯ artists the opportunity to learn from and rehearse with a professional director.

The six directors are Tollemache, Jeff Kingsford Brown, Rachel Lenart, Jamie Mccaskill, Carrie Green, and Peter Hambleton.

Tollemache said the project was a rare chance for Palmerston North audiences to hear some of the newest and most exciting voices in New Zealand theatre, and an opportunity for emerging writers and actors to work with a professional theatre.

Dr Karen Seccombe, from Square Edge, was calling for expressions of interest from artists who created work over the lockdown period.

‘‘This is a fabulous opportunity to showcase topical, recent works to a broad sector of our local community, and to connect with writers, actors, and the public,’’ she said.

Actors have until July 1 to go to the Centrepoint website and register for an audition.

Artists interested can email a brief statement, contact information and images of their works to communityarts@ca.org.nz by the same date.
