Return to the field

-

Children can get back into sport with a running leap during the school holidays through a programme combining five codes.

The Manawatu Cricket Association, Netball Manawatu, Hockey Manawatu, Central Football and the Manawatu Rugby Union have joined forces with the common goal of wanting to see children back on the field after missing out on sport during lockdown.

There will be an indoor programme and an outdoor programme open to youngsters in school years three to 13.

Manawatu Cricket Association general manager James Lovegrove said the programme aimed to get 200 children moving each week at $60 a child for the whole week, with 50 spots available for free.

He said all 50 spaces were still available and was encouraging parents wanting to get involved to contact Sport Manawatu.

‘‘It’s for those kids that would otherwise miss out.’’

The children will be split into groups of 30-40 and will train for the first two days, rotating through each sport.

The third day of the week will be a game day full of fun activities.

Lovegrove said it was about getting children motivated and giving them a chance to have a go.

If they enrolled to play one of the sports next year that would be a win.

‘‘We just want the kids to be active and for each of the sports to give the kids an opportunity.

‘‘All five sports are really committed and excited about it.’’

The outdoor programme is at Ongley Park from July 6 to 8, 9am to 3pm.

The indoor programme is at the B and M Centre, from July 13 to 15, 9am to 2.30pm, where children can try badminton, basketball, skateboarding and volleyball.

Pita Pit has sponsored the event and will provide lunch for the children.

Sport Manawatu is supporting the programme with advertising, co-ordinating the event and paying coaches.
