Supportive students shave heads

-

A group of Levin students did not hesitate about having their heads shaved in the name of a good cause.

Students from Waiopehu College in Levin volunteered to have their heads shaved on Friday as part of a fundraiser for Shave For a Cure for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

The clippers were buzzing as the procession of students kept coming.

Some students were sporting crazy hair or wigs in support and even principal Mark Robinson was sporting a tartan cap with orange hair.

Student Elli Guilford, 16, had raised about $1600 on her own and lost her long locks for the fundraiser, first having her pig tails cut off, then the rest of her hair shaved off.

’’Last year my nana passed away and a lot of my friends and family have been affected by cancer.

‘‘I wanted to do something so I can raise awareness and raise money for peoplewho are affected.’’

She said having her head shaved in front of the school was daunting but it was worth it. She had been growing her hair for about two years so to cut it all off was a big thing, she said.

Student Alexis Farr-van Hagen, 18, had her short hair shaved by friend Charli Robinson, 17, and then was handed cash from her school-mates for the fundraiser.

Farr-van Hagen shaved her head during the national lockdown but said it was fun to do it again.

She said it was new cutting her hair in front of so many people but she was inspired because someone in her family had had cancer.

Student Roman Fryer, 14, shaved his hair for the second year in a row.

He said he was convinced to do it by his friends and wanted to help the cause.

Robinson said it was the biggest event the school had held this year.

’’Last year a student raised quite a bit of money. She is the student rep on the board [of trustees] and she said can we make a bit more money.

‘‘We did it [outside] to try and get a bit more money.’’
