Central women look for first win in final game

- George Heagney

The Central women are back at home this weekend for their final game of the season, their last chance of grabbing awin.

Winless Central play Southern at Massey University, Palmerston North, tomorrow in the last roundrobin match of the season, a game Central should be targeting to win.

Central were beaten 4-0 by Northern in Auckland last weekend, but will be more confident back in Manawatu¯.

Northern led the match 2-0 at halftime, but rammed home two goals in injury time at the end of the game to blow the score out.

Central lost three players to injury during the game and the experienced mikaela Box all had to stand in as goalkeeper.

Midfielder Aniela Jensen was named in the national league team of the month for November.

Central have had big losses to the top three sides, Northern, Auckland and Canterbury, but otherwise it has been close between the rest of the teams, so Southern shouldn’t be out of reach.

Southern won 2-1 over WaikatoBay of Plenty in Dunedin last week.

Central’s only points of the season came in a 2-all draw against Waikato-bay of Plenty, a game Central should have won.

Despite the result against Northern, Central ran Capital close in their last game in Palmerston North, which Central just won 1-0, and Central will be gunning to tip Southern over and gain their first win of the season.

Standings: Auckland 12, Canterbury 12, Northern 10, Capital 10, WAIBOP 4, Southern 3, Central 1.
