Levin gets off to an impressive start

- George Heagney

Levin Hockey have made an impressive start to the men’s club competition, with a 3-0 win over Marist.

Coach Corey Prouting said they played extremely well in the opening round of the competition at the twin turfs last Saturday.

‘‘We’re normally a bit of a slow starting team,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve got more points in the first game this year than the whole first round last year. There was really good intensity from both teams.’’

Marist started the game well and led 2-0 at quartertime after a field goal from Mattie Wilson and a goal from Hayden Krivan from a penalty corner.

That gave them breathing space for the next quarter and Marist were chasing the game, with Levin still leading 2-0 at halftime.

Marist came back at them in the second half and put pressure on, but Levin held out and the lethal Wilson sealed the win with another goal in the fourth quarter.

Midfielder Jackson Hirini was Levin’s standout player, distributing the ball well and creating opportunities.

In the other men’s games,

Massey edged High School

Hockey Club 3-2 at Massey University.

Defending champions College Premier won 4-2 against Whanganui at Whanganui.
