Home gutted, pets killed

- KYMBERLEE FERNANDES

Delwyn Fletcher and her daughter have been forced to vacate their home in Otahuhu after a fire gutted the living room and damaged the rest of the house.

The pair have also lost two cats and a chihuahua as a result of the fire.

The fire broke when no one was home.

Caroline, their neighbour tried putting it out, while her aunt in Whangarei saw it on Facebook and was the one to call 111 for help.

’’My son and daughter-in-law have taken the day off to come and help me,’’ says Delwyn ‘‘My brother will be coming tomorrow all the way from Hamilton.’’

Whilst rummaging through what’s left of her home she surprisingly found a packet of firecrackers that didn’t go off, a wooden sculpture of Buddha and a few old one dollar notes.

She also wanted to say how grateful she was for all the help she had received.

‘‘It’s the worst situations that bring out the best in people’’, she says. ‘‘It could have been worse.’’

The family’s pets will also be cremated for free.

Delwyn and her daughter will be staying at her mother’s house in Papatoetoe.

The neighbours have a separate electric connection and weren’t affected much by the incident.

The reason for the fire is still inconclusive.
