Kids visit SPCA to donate goods
Children armed themselves with a mixing bowl and wooden spoon in the fight against animal cruelty.
The Airport Lollipops Educare have recently taken part in the SPCA Cupcake Day to raise money for SPCA’s ongoing protection and care of animals.
The centre sold 900 cupcakes and raised over $2000 for the SPCA, which go directly towards helping animals in the local area.
Early childhood educator Jody King says they created cupcake stalls which every room contributed cupcakes daily to sell.
‘‘Whether baked by the children, staff, parents or whanau. Our children have gone to the Qantas/ Jetconnect building, Air New Zealand and Mainfreight offices to sell the cupcakes they have made.’’
Most of the cupcakes were baked at the centre with the children. However the parents and children have also contributed by baking at home and adding it to the bake sale.
‘‘We also held a dress up day where all the children were encouraged to dress as their favourite animal and also bring in an item of animal food for us to take to the SPCA to donate,’’ she says.
‘‘We are ever so grateful for all the effort everyone has contributed.’’
Now in its eighth year, SPCA Cupcake Day is aiming to be the biggest yet. Last year over 1,600 participants took to their kitchens, raising more than $390,000 for the SPCA’s ongoing work fighting animal cruelty through prevention and education
When King heard about the cupcake day, she knew it would be another great cause to fund raise for after the huge success with ‘Round the Bays’.
‘‘It was one that would allow a lot of involvement from the children especially considering how much the children are currently interested in animals after our recent Auckland Zoo excursion,’’ she says.
King says she has enjoyed connecting with the families and the local community.
‘‘Seeing everyone get involved and put so much effort into fundraising for the SPCA.’’
‘‘Also by doing this is means that we are supporting the children in developing an understanding of giving back and supporting their local community as the SPCA is within our local area.’’
