Otahuhu start season with confidence
The Otahuhu premier women’s softball team boasts one of Auckland’s most potent pitching line up this season.
Complimenting regulars Stephanie Parks and Pania Monk will be Loran Park and Michal Fletcher.
Parker is a Junior White Sox who’s back with her old club after two years aways on a softball scholarship at Eastern Arizona College in the United States.
Fletcher, the daughter of New Zealand softball legend Chuck Tangaroa, was the best pitcher in the women’s games in New Zealand before stepping down from the White Sox.
Coach Jamie Brear says the pair will make Otahuhu even more competitive than they were last season.
‘‘Michal chose to play for use and her ability to pitch and play first base is terrific for the team. She adds a wealth of experience and knowledge and really gives us great depth on the pitching mound.
‘‘We’re really keen to seen how Loran goes. She has returned with a lot more speed and movement which will give us plenty of variety. We now have four exceptional pitcher with Sammi and Pania returning season.’’
Another new addition to the team is Junior White Sox catcher Mega Glading from Papanui in Christchurch. She’s in to fill the big boots of White Sox catcher Stefanie Smith nee Trutanic who has joined neighbours Howick.
‘‘We’re a much younger team than last season but still more than capable of remaining in the top four in Auckland and top six in NZ,’’ Brear says.
‘‘We have an extremely strong pitching line up, with the challenge to keep them all match fit.’’
Otahuhu women launch their season against the Roosters at Starling Park, Ranui on Saturday at midday. Otahuhu men’s premier reserves and premiers face Auckland United at Rosedale Park, Albany on Saturday at 2pm and 4pm respectively.
