Christmas showcase ready to entertain

- CHRIS HARROWELL

People don’t need to drag themselves into central Auckland to enjoy spectacular free entertainment this festive season.

The Manurewa Christmas in the Park is on December 10 and everyone’s invited.

It’s at Mountfort Park in Weymouth Rd and organised by staff and volunteers from local churches including senior pastor Stephen Miller and Talya Wilson from Manukau New Life Church.

The popular alcohol-free community event features a wide range of live entertainment as well as bouncy castles, facepainting, food stalls and a massive fireworks display.

Miller says the annual outdoor concert is a ‘‘real community event’’.

‘‘This is the biggest event in Manurewa each year.

‘‘We see thousands of people come out for the family-friendly atmosphere and we love seeing the whole community enjoying themselves.

‘‘People can bring a picnic and enjoy some amazing music, look at the different stalls run by community groups, and there will be a photo booth and inexpensive food.’’

Taking part in the show, which this year has the theme ‘Celebrate’, are singers and dancers from Roscommon School and a ukulele group from Manurewa East School.

Award-winning gospel singer Amara Duru and talented Manurewa teenager Taylor Taraare are also set to showcase their talent.

Duru, who was born in Nigeria, was named best New Zealand gospel act at this year’s Afro- Australia

Awards.

Singer-guitarist Taraare is a key part of the Project Hope music group, which has shared a positive, anti-bullying message with South Auckland primary and intermediate school pupils this year. Music and Movie

Miller says the event has a Christian theme but it’s suitable for people of all faiths and cultures.

‘‘We don’t force anything on anyone but we sing fewer songs about Santa Claus and more about Jesus.

‘‘This community has a strong Christian flavour and a number of people come for that reason.’’

The Manurewa Christmas in the Park is funded by the Manurewa Local Board with support from local churches.

It’s from 5pm to 9.30pm on December 10 at Mountfort Park, Weymouth Rd, and entry is free.
