Record numbers at club champs

Tennis is catching on at the Sunnyside Tennis Club in Papatoetoe judging by entries to their junior championships.

Junior co-ordinator, Deborah Mowlem says the 28 entries is the largest since the club championships were resurrected three years ago.

‘‘It reflects the recent growth of the junior section in the club. There were many hard fought matches all of them played in great spirit with good support from families,’’ she says.

The championships started on March 31 under the recently installed floodlights at the club courts in York St. The under-12 final between Jordan Gow and Luca Bland proved the match of the tournament. Eight year old Luca won a tie-breaker to take the match 9-8. The juniors section winds down for win but they won’t all be in hibernation. Mowlem says the club has organised winter coaching for those wanting to continue and these start on May 4 at 6pm.
