Manukau and Otahuhu in final

- ALAN APTED

‘‘ We're not about to take Otahuhu for granted.’’

Manukau Rovers and Otahuhu are the last south Auckland teams standing in the Auckland club rugby playoffs.

The pair playoff for the Presidents Cup at Williams Park in Mangere on Saturday after respective semi final wins against Waitakere City and Te Papapa Onehunga.

The Rovers beat Waitakere City 25-17 with a brace of tries to CharlesTeraitua and one each to Siosiua Kaifa, Makoni Pole and Faamasino Mann while Otahuhu scored their first win of the season with a 24-10 upset of Te Papapa Onehunga.

Nofo Amituanai, George Roach and Junior Oliali-Fiso scored Otahuhu’s tries.

Otahuhu manager Tologataua Pouono Tipama’a says the win has his side fired up for the final.

‘‘The boys are very excited. It hasn’t been the best of seasons for us but now that we’re in with a chance of winning some silverware everyone is energised.’’

It’s for that very reason that Manukau Rovers are taking a cautious approach to the match.

They’ve beaten Otahuhu twice already this season and promise not to underestimate the red and blacks.

‘‘No game of rugby is easy and we’re not about to take Otahuhu for granted. Everyone expected Te Papapa to beat them last Saturday but look at what happened,’’ says Manukau coach Jason Wordsworth.

‘‘Our goal is to finish the season on a positive note and build towards the 2017 season. We also want to thank our loyal supporters and the best way to do that is win the Peter Fatialofa Memorial Trophy.’’

Papatoetoe and East Tamaki, the two better performed South Auckland teams, both crashed out of silverware contention on Saturday.

Papatoetoe were upset 14-10 by Marist in the semifinal of the Jubilee Trophy. It was a disappointing end to their season because they’d beaten Marist 27-10 in the final round of the Alan McEvoy Memorial Trophy the previous weekend.

East Tamaki were no match for University in the semifinal of the Portola Cup. They lost 36-10 at Colin Maiden Park. Brothers Wilson and Solofa Silipa scored East Tamaki’s point.

University will face Eden in the final.

Grammar TEC and Suburbs will play for the Gallaher Shield at Eden Park on Saturday. Grammar TEC beat College Rifles 27-10 in their semi final and Suburbs beat Ponsonby 18-7 in the other.
