Plywood polar bear cub on the loose in city

- CATRIN OWEN

There’s a polar bear cub on the loose in Auckland.

One of the cubs from the Winter Wonderland display in Aotea Square has gone for a walkabout and its mother is said to be incredibly distressed.

‘‘Our polar bear family - Mrs Bear and her wee cubs - came to stay in Aotea Square, as they do every winter all the way from Greenland,’’ Auckland Live’s Georgina Cervin said.

Nanuuk, the littlest bear, went missing on Friday night.

This missing cub is not the first polar bear to go missing in Auckland.

A polar bear lantern went missing in February.

After a public plea for it to be returned, it showed up three days later 38km away at the Orewa police station.

The police were unsure of where his journey took him, but the polar bear was returned with an anonymous note saying the person had taken it and returned it.

This missing polar bear is made out of plywood and painted white.

Auckland Live is also trying to access CCTV footage from Friday night.

Any sightings of the cub can be reported to Auckland Live’s Facebook page.
