Pregnancy and menopause are factors in hair loss

-

Around half of all pregnant women will experience some degree of hair loss between one and five months after giving birth.

Often referred to as excessive shedding – or telogen effluvium – it can in extreme cases lead to traumatic loss of hair.

Claudia Sidhu, Chief Executive Officer of SRS Hair Clinics, says some women have reported losing clumps of hair at a time which in turn may develop into a chronic disorder where severe loss is maintained for months or even years.

‘‘More women are choosing to fall pregnant in their 30s and even 40s and this can lead to significant hair problems when allied with hormonal change,’’ she says. ‘‘If women are experiencing this, then I would advise them to seek help.’’

She says there are a number of ways to reduce hair loss during and after pregnancy. SRS, with 30 years of experience in providing natural hair solutions, can offer microscopic hair examinations to determine the most likely cause – and solutions - at their Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton clinics.

Changing hormone levels are also considered to be a factor in hair loss in women. This occurs most frequently during menopause when oestrogen levels are lowered.

Hair loss or thinning can be a traumatic experience for women and a recent survey in Australia revealed that up to 24 per cent of women who experience hair loss liken it to losing a limb.

SRS also treat children who may be suffering from hair loss.

‘‘This often results from some type of trauma such as the break-up of their parents, bullying or stress at school,’’ Claudia Sidhu says. ‘‘Excessive exposure to cleaning aids or chemicals can also cause hair loss in children.’’
