From classroom to the opera stage

- EMILY FORD

Dressing up in ball gowns and performing opera across the country has become the norm for Jessica Hindin.

The Auckland artist and her fiance singer Bonaventure AllanMoetaua are part of Operatunity’s summer concert tour of New Zealand, Waltz of My Heart.

The concert is a celebration of the waltz, featuring classic Viennese songs like Blue Danube Waltz and I’m In Love With Vienna, and is coming to south Auckland on February 22.

Hindin is the music director for Sistema Aotearoa, a youth development trust which teaches young people through music.

She plays violin in the Operatunity series and she’s enjoying taking a break from her teaching to perform with AllanMoetaua everyday.

‘‘I only do one daytime concert tour a year so this is a nice contrast for me and it’s really fun touring with my partner and getting to spend time together.’’

They’ve toured to places like Nelson, Gisborne, and Rotorua for their daytime concerts, sharing lunches with their audiences after each show.

‘‘It’s nice getting to catch up with people we perform for each year. I’m good at remembering faces but not so good at names.’’

Waltz of My Heart is on at Hawkins Theatre in Papakura from February 22. Tickets at operatunity.co.nz.
