Global opportunities for AUT Communications graduate

-

With an interest in radio and writing, studying communications was the obvious choice for AUT Bachelor of Communication Studies alumnus Shaan Mehta.

‘‘AUT is well known for its communications school, and I knew the Bachelor of Communication Studies would help lead me in the right direction because of all the opportunities that come with it,’’ says Shaan who majored in digital media, with a minor in journalism.

‘‘There were so many great facilities for us to use, and I really admire AUT’s practical approach to learning. It prepares you for life after university.’’

Shaan’s advice for other students is to make the most of the opportunities AUT offers.

‘‘Make sure to get involved in all the programmes on offer for students. Meet as many people as possible, work hard and most importantly, enjoy yourself.’’

Being able to gain international experience was the highlight for Shaan, who went on a student exchange to the University of Missouri in his second year and was awarded an AUT Internz internship in his final year.

‘‘The AUT Internz programme offered a position at Paramount Recording Studios in Hollywood for students in the digital media field. I knew it was the perfect fit for me. I still feel honoured by the opportunity AUT gave me – the Internz programme is amazing and gives people like myself a chance to pursue their dreams.’’

His internship was only the beginning of his career in the music industry, and Shaan is now based in Chicago, successfully working as a music producer.

‘‘After my internship at Paramount, I pursued a career in music production. I now produce and compose songs for artists and songwriters, working in different recording studios and overseeing projects like EP’s, albums and mixtapes. My team and I are looking to go on tour next spring.’’

Shaan says he loves the creative process.

‘‘I never get tired of coming up with new ideas, and I enjoy collaborating with other musicians and producers. Travelling across the USA and constantly meeting new people is also one of the perks of the job.’’
