Broken windows latest vandalism at sports centre

- EMILY FORD

It’s likely to cost more than $20,000 to improve security at a frequently vandalised Auckland Council sports complex. Smashed windows and gang-inscribed doors are the latest damage done to council-owned Rongomai Sports Centre in tara.

Nothing was stolen in the recent attempt, but it’s the sixth break-in in the past six months, and the Rongomai Sports Trust, which operates the building, has had enough. Trustee Shiu Singh says the group can’t afford things like CCTV security footage or alarm systems, but it’s looking to apply for tara-Papatoetoe Local Board funding for that.

The trustees are all voluntary and put a lot of time, money and effort into the place, Singh says, and it’s frustrating for them to see their hard work diminished by vandals.

‘‘We take three steps forward and then four steps backwards,’’ Singh says.

Auckland Council management and maintenance head Agnes McCormack says it’s working with the trust on security proposals, including CCTV cameras and collapsible roller doors. She expects the security measures will cost about $25,000 to install, while repairs to the building will be covered by Council’s insurance.

Opened in 2012 and situated on Rongomai Park, the $2 million sports centre includes football fields, softball diamonds, changing rooms, function rooms, and meeting rooms. It is home to the sports clubs Southern Braves Softball and South Auckland Rangers Football, of which Singh is also the president. Singh believes the spate of vandalism over the past year is being caused by the same group of teenagers, mostly during the daytime.

The vandals are after whatever they can get their hands on, and it’s not uncommon for vehicles in the carpark to get broken into as well, he says. He says having someone based at the centre during the day to deter thieves could well be another option.

Speaking at the board’s September business meeting, tara- Papatoetoe Local Board deputy chairman Ross Robertson said the recent vandalism is disappointing.

‘‘It’s mindless individuals who have nothing better to do than destroy the enjoyment others have,’’ Robertson said. ‘‘They’re denying opportunities for our community.’’O¯
