Some of you will take great comfort in the news out this week that the Spice Girls are getting back together.

It’s minus Posh but was she ever really anyone’s favourite?

Some cruelly dismissed this feckless, fun-loving five as being a band for the adhd generation.

But they have left us with girl power and a fine legacy of lyrics for all time like ‘‘set your spirit free, it’s the only way to be’’.

In actual spice terms they’ve always been about as subtle as a liberal dosing of MSG. But scientists are still on the fence as to whether it’s really bad for you.

Of course the cynics among you might point out that they’re possibly all broke and Posh clearly isn’t so maybe that’s why she’s sitting this one out.

Personally I was always team Sporty Spice, I could say it was because she was the best singer but it was probably a much sketchier reason than that.

Anyway all of this is academic because none of their spiciness will be drifting anywhere close to New Zealand.

All of that said there is the quiet hope they don’t keep going until they’re on the pension trail. They will lose some of their impact if they need to be wheeled out on the stage.
