What’s your number one tip for the weekend gardener?

Enjoy the beauty of your own creation.

What’s been the biggest change in home gardening in the past 20 years?

The use of native plants in the garden. This is now a world-wide horticultural movement.

What makes you roll your eyes in a garden? Statues of cherubs. What gardening tool could you not live without?

Hori-hori, weeding knife.

Weeds: weed killer or by hand? Hand weeding every time. What is your favourite garden? And why?

Currently, the 50 gardens described in my new book GardenLust. [But] I am particularly fond of Paripuma here in Marlborough. It is a formal garden of New Zealand native plants. It has strong design and yet has a rare restraint.

Woods is giving two talks at the festival; Friday, November 9, 6.30pm-8.30pm and Sunday, November 11, 9.30am-11.30am. Both $60. a Japanese
