Marlborough Express - Weekend Express
All go for annual gardening celebration
Nelmac Garden Marlborough is fast approaching. Saturday Express landscaping columnist Christo Saggers provides a run down on some of the highlights this year.
It is that time of year again and our very own garden festival is upon us.
Nelmac Garden Marlborough is the highlight of the Marlborough gardening calendar and this year it is to be no exception.
There are seven great tours that will take you to all corners of the region and to all environments.
There are 10 workshops where enthusiastic presenters will regale you with information about their area of expertise.
However, best of all there is a garden party entitled Go Wild at The Spring.
There is going to be great food, Marlborough wine and wild sounds from a number of live bands.
It is one of Marlborough’s epic social events and should not be missed.
Last year saw the return of the garden awards and they will continue this year.
I have mentioned much in my columns about streetscapes and here is a chance for those who appreciate the importance of street appeal and commercial frontages to be recognised.
Rewards like this go along way to promote social unity and harmony – making residents proud of their environment.
Perhaps the most popular event of the festival is the Stihl Shop Garden Fete which will be on Sunday, November 8 in Seymour Square, Blenheim. Same place, same stuff – with perhaps a few new stalls.
It is a great place to pick up some spring plants, gardening tools and accessories as well some yummy Marlborough tucker – all your favourites.
It is a great event for Marlburians and aliens, no not the little green men, although they would be very welcome as they are sure to have green thumbs.
There is a whole lot of work that goes into organising an event of this magnitude and the members of the committee who dedicate heaps of their free time as well as Julia Brown and Debbie Carter, who run the show, should be proud of yet another job well done.
Garden Marlborough is an event run by the community for the community.
The Garden Marlborough Scholarship to support students studying for Horticulture Level 4 course at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology was launched earlier this year.
This and all the other good deeds the event achieves are worthy of respect and please show yours by committing to support this event. The weekend is not completely sold out so do call the office now on 03 577 5500 or visit gardenmarlborough.co.nz to book events before it is too late.
If you are a keen gardener or aspire to be then this is a must see and do event for you.
I hope you enjoy your tours and workshops, the fete and the party. You cannot do it all but there is much to do – so go forth and garden.
