Band’s single-minded obsession

- ALICE ANGELONI

Blenheim’s guitar bashing ‘‘wastrels’’ Big Scout has released its first single of the decade, along with a music video.

The punk band, made up of three mates from Blenheim are becoming known for their raw and intense performances, released their single Flung with a show at the Framingham Underground last week.

The two song EP, came alongside a self-produced video, filmed ‘‘mainly in a bathroom’’ and showed Greg Slatter on vocals, backed by band members Matthew Hellriegel and Jim Tannock.

‘‘There’s no pretense that we’re these cool, moody rock guys, we’re just three dofs [sic] from Marlborough,’’ Tannock said.

‘‘That’s what the video portrays, it’s fairly honest.’’

Their initial thought was to release an album, Tannock said.

‘‘But we’re a little band based in Blenheim so that would be exciting for a week and then it’s like, what do we do now?’’

Instead, they had decided to release singles in stages to ‘‘spin it out’’ and ‘‘build momentum’’, he said.

‘‘Take learning from every time we do a release, and see what works and what doesn’t.’’

In about 6 to 8 weeks, they would push out the next single and video. By the fourth single, they wanted to go on tour.

‘‘It’s exciting to have a plan that’s a big picture,’’ he said.

Framingham Winery had been a ‘‘big supporter’’, including paying for their recording costs for six songs which they recorded at the Plant in November.

They had played a suite of shows in the past 12 months, which included opening for bands the Schizophonics, The

Chills, Los Angeles band No Age and New Jersey band Screaming Females.

At a show last week, Tannock said a fellow music-lover had described them as ‘‘niche in terms of your music’’ but also ‘‘niche because you’re from Blenheim’’.

Their new songs Flung and Everything Must Go can be found on streaming platforms.
