Students the bald and the brave

- RAHUL BHATTARAI

Students from Marlborough Boys’ College have shaved their heads to fundraise for people suffering from leukaemia and blood cancer.

Marlborough Boys’ College year 13 student and prefect Adi Chowfin said he and others at the school wanted to help raise awareness for the Shave for A Cure cause.

‘‘The boys shaved it voluntarily, and I am very happy I did it too,’’ he said. ‘‘It was a really good cause, to help raise awareness for it and take a stand out there for many people who are going through cancer.’’

Chowfin is a prefect for ‘‘RIPR’’, which represents the school’s four core values — Responsibilities, Involvement, Pride and Respect.

Sport prefect Ryan Woodhouse said this was the first time he had taken part in a charity event, and he was glad to have done it.

‘‘It’s just raising some money for the cancer research, so they can help patients get the treatment they need,’’ he said. ‘‘It was a good cause to do it for.’’ .

College student rep- resentative for board of trustees Jacob Collins said he didn’t think twice when the idea was proposed by the dean of the school.

‘‘The reason I did it was because I had a couple of family members in the past who had passed away from cancer, so when the opportunity was there I had no hesitation,’’ he said.

This was the first time Collins participated in a charity event, who said he was very keen to show ongoing support to charity events of this kind in the future.

Marlborough Boys’ College year 13 dean Philip Kotze said seven prefects volunteered for the fundraiser, including himself.

Hairdressers from Cutz on Weld did the shaving, ‘‘and they were really supportive.’’

So far, college students have raised just over $4000.

Full details about the charity are available on the Shave For Cure website, and further details of leukaemia and blood cancer are available on www.leukaemia.org.nz
