Nappies contain ‘explosions’ in style
Waikato siblings Grant Taylor and Louise Stainthorpe have launched an online business selling designer nappies that can cope with highspeed explosions.
Rascal + Friends began when Stainthorpe, who has four children, was telling Taylor about the struggle to find a nappy that had a good fit for her tots.
Originally Taylor had wanted to start a subscription-based toilet paper business, delivering toilet paper to homes and businesses throughout New Zealand.
But the toilet paper business was too diverse, and probably not that interesting, Taylor said.
Creating a company that sold designer nappies online seemed like better option.
The pair spent hours researching nappy design. They wanted something that looked good and created as little mess as possible.
Stainthorpe said a good nappy has absorbency, a good leak guard and is comfortable. Rascal + Friends nappies feature a pocket under the bottom ‘‘so when when you get a high-speed explosion it catches it quite nicely’’.
The nappies are made in China but designed in New Zealand.
Taylor said they wanted to create something that appealed to mothers. ‘‘The way that they look, they’re quite different to anything out there – more patterns and neutral colours.’’
Taylor had wanted the nappies to be manufactured in New Zealand but the cost would make the nappies too expensive.
Finding a manufacturer in China proved to be more challenging than expected, Stainthorpe said. ‘‘It’s been a fun process and a frustrating process.’’
The nappies come in five sizes and prices range from $12.99 to $17.99.
