Renwick keep T20 title

- PETER JONES

Renwick’s grasp on the Marlborough second grade Twenty20 title remains strong.

The defending champions retained their title on Friday evening with a fivewicket win over Wairau Valley at Horton Park.

Renwick’s victory was based around a solid bowling and fielding performance where they restricted the dangerous Valley batting line-up to just 107-8 from their allotted 20 overs.

Jason Campbell picked up a couple of early wickets to set Valley back on their heels from the outset, returning the outstandingly economic figures of 2-8 from his four overs. However, Daniel Allan and Heath Murphy combined to resurrect Valley’s innings, putting together a muchneeded 54-run partnership before the experienced Ed Gilhooly had Murphy caught from a mistimed shot for 26 from 20 deliveries.

Allan continued, taking the score to 88 and his person tally to 41 from 40 balls before Daryl Roughan, the most destructive of Renwick’s attack with 4-15 from his four overs, bowled him in the 14th over.

From there Valley’s runs dried up, leaving them well short of a defendable total, especially when Campbell and Max Brydon blasted 52 runs for the first wicket from just five overs in reply.

Campbell eventually fell for 23 off 19, Brydon for 35 from 19, with seven fours, but the momentum continued through Todd Nicholas, 21 from 19, and Mark Zillwood as Renwick reached their victory target in the 14th over for the loss of just five wickets.

Scoreboard: Wairau Valley 107 from 20 overs (Daniel Allan 41, Heath Murphy 26, Eddie Poswillo 11, Daryl Roughan 4-15, Jason Campbell 2-8) Renwick 108-5 from 13.3 overs (Campbell 23, Max Brydon 35, Todd Nicholas 21, Mark Zillwood 12, Daniel Allan 2-7). Renwick win by five wickets.
