- PETER JONES

Fairweathers, Uso and Bella’s Team scored premier grade wins during the latest round of the Marlborough Volleyball Fairweathers’ Senior Summer League at Stadium 2000.

The Fairweathers v Treefellas match on Thursday turned into a tight game featuring some excellent passing. Treefellas won the first set 25-18 but Fairweathers turned the tables to win the next 25-23. Set three was also close, Fairweathers getting their nose in front by two points to win the game. Youngsters Maddy Croad and Grace-Waring Jones filled in for Fairweathers and showed plenty of promise.

In the next match Uso took on 1st Place. In the first set Uso pulled away to a big lead before 1st Place, made up of MBC senior players, began to claw their way back into the contest. However their revival came too late, Uso claiming victory 25-18. The second set featured long rallies and great digs with Uso’s consistency and Afa Lauvai’s big hitting proving too much for 1st Place, Uso winning 25-22. In a shortened third set due to time constraints, Uso pulled away to a 7-1 lead and then played just well enough to win 15-9.

The final game, between Bellas Team and KVT 1 was a hard-hitting encounter. Bellas Teams’ Emma Gardiner got the better of Afa Lauvai’s spikes to set her team up for a 2-1 victory. Set scores were 25-23, 22-25 and 15-6.
